Picture, if you will; River Ridge, New Orleans. With a gated residental cluster and a very small commercial area that boasts shops such as the food store that is simply called Dewey's, it is comparitively small to its big city cousins. Sun lit and quiet, it is nondescript and unassuming. A few rough spots to the roads, a few street signs that always seem to lean tiredly to the side, no matter how many times city workers try to straighten them. Posters advertising babysitters and used cars for sale are layered on the weathered wood of electrical poles. Come winter, the town streets are strung with white lights and glittering snowflakes, and during the summer children sell lemonade in front of their houses, while their parents call furtively from the door that they stay in the shade, and reapply sunscreen to battle the scorching heat. It is, to the untrained eye, a charming, slow moving Southern suburb. Some residents are still whispering over the fact that there's a plastic surgery clinic less than two miles away.

Yes, it seems like a quiet, peaceful suburb, and in many ways it is. It's just a normal part of New Orleans, tucked away from the tourist attractions and bright colours that draw people from all over the globe. The one thing that differs from your average neighbourhood is who lives there. Tucked neatly behind the gates that seperate the homes from the shops, the residents of River Ridge all share the same secret.

They have psychic abilities.

Living in the small community, which looks like it was made with three or four different house shaped cookie cutters, you'll find mediums, empaths, psychometrics, and people who always seem to know when something terrible is going to happen. People who maybe can't sleep more than an hour or two a night, because sleeping longer than that causes them to astral project and be in a near-comotose state for three full days. People who can look at a person and know their mood, because they can see the colourful aura swirling around them. Nobody is quite sure why these psychics have decided to reside in this speck of a town, or when, or how they found each other. To most people living outside of The Ridge, it's just a rumor. A tall tale, an urban legend that nobody knows the origin of. Something to be gossiped about at slumber parties ('Did you know about the people with the weird powers who live in that gated community by the pink store? I've heard that they can set you on fire with their thoughts.') or chatted about in hushed tones on Sunday's after church. It's a fun story to tell, but something that not many people really believe. And the chances are good that it's been told to an actual member of the psychic community more than once, because... well. You know how gossip spreads.

For the most part, the residents of The Ridge live quietly, keeping to themselves and living their lives in the only way they know how. They go to school, they go to work, and they try their best to keep their abilities, the secret part of themselves that sets them apart from the rest of the general population, in control.
